There are photographers who swear by Black & White, others by Colour only. And I believe them when they say that this way they are able to concentrate much better on the intended outcome. Not unlike the ones who only ever shoot one lens, or one focal length. I don't want to go that route, or at least not yet. But I concur that it is often beneficial to look at a coherent body of work, thus separating the Black & White from the Colour photographs is what I do in my two main galleries here.

mylenwyd Icons

mylenwyd@yahoo.com (Joachim W. Schroeter (JoWSch)) — Wed, 19 Aug 2026 09:44:42 GMT

]]>As a photographer you always have images in your head which don't leave you anymore - most of them you've seen but were unable to take a photo, or if you did it didn't come out the way it would have had to, but some hit you on the screen just as they had in real life. This collection reunites the ones I feel about this way. I might have made more complex images, technically and also by content, but if there is an eternal collection of those of my images which could be termed iconic in my own view, this is it. They are the images which capture a scene or a person the way I had imagined, or in a way which has revealed to me something entirely new. As with other Select(ion) categories I've so far limited myself to 50 images overall - so there are more which I find similarly unique, but which can't be shown here now. And unlike the other "Select" collections here on mylenwyd, where the best image(s) of recent sessions are usually represented more prominently, "Icons" entries are purely by my relationship to the image, and irrespective of when the image was made.

I am German by birth, Bavarian for foreigners, Franconian for those who consider themselves the real Bavarians, and a "Lower Franconian" among my own folks at home. Much as Germany overall, my home country and counties continue to enchant me with a diversity and density of accessible forest not found in many other places. It's among the trees that I can find myself, calm and strength, solace and solitude. Beauty and peace.

I try to achieve what I call "natural" portraits, and I like "Faces with a story". I could talk a lot about it, but nobody has said it better than Kirk Tuck over in this post of his (excerpt quote hereunder):

Have you tried my favorite portrait exercise? It goes like this: Find a model who is also an interesting person and who is patient. Set up your lighting and camera before the subject gets to the studio. Make tea or coffee for your subject when they arrive. Have the subject settle into their space on their designated chair, posing stool or whatever. Sit on a chair or stool next to your camera. Ask them about their day. Ask them about their kids. As them about their passion in life. Ask them where they grew up and what their favorite kind of food is. Ask them what ideas they have when the think about portraits. Ask them what they want to be doing next week, next month and next year. Let them talk. Sip coffee or tea. Find the things you have in common. Listen to the things that they are focused on.

Then, tell them about the portrait process you are trying to do. Tell them what they can do to help you make the process work. Tell them what your goal in this project is.
Once you've discussed these things, and you've both had a warm beverage, and you are both comfortable. Start the process of making the portrait.

Only at this point should you begin to handle the camera.

Finally, don't hide behind the camera. It severs the connection you have both tried hard to build.
